Abakansk, a town in the very south of Siberia, near the junction of the Abakan with the Yenisei. It has coal-mines and ironworks, and, for this latitude, an exceptionally mild climate. In the country round large numbers of grave-mounds have been found, abounding in urns and funeral ornaments of gold and other metals. The place was fortified with a palisade in the days of Peter the Great, and has of late become important. Pop. 3000, including a considerable number of convicts and political exiles.
