Aberystwith

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 1: A to Beaufort, p. 15

Aberystwith, a seaport and municipal borough of Cardiganshire, on the Ystwith, at its mouth in Cardigan Bay, 244 miles NW. of London by rail. It is the seat of the University College of Wales (1872), with a principal and staff of ten professors or lecturers. The building was partly destroyed by fire in 1885, and was restored in 1887 at a cost of £17,900. There are remains of a castle (1109). Its fine situation and climate combine with its marine terrace and promenade pier to make Aberystwith a favourite bathing-place. Till 1885 it was one of the Cardigan parliamentary boroughs. Pop. (1881) 7088; (1891) 6725.
