Acetal, C_2H_4(OC_2H_5)_2, is a colourless liquid, of an agreeable odour, and a flavour said to resemble that of the hazel-nut. It is one of the products of the slow oxidation of alcohol under the influence of finely divided platinum, or of chlorine, or of dilute sulphuric acid and peroxide of manganese. Its specific gravity is .821, and it boils at 221^\circ F. (105^\circ C.). It yields various reactions and products of interest in organic chemistry.
