Adelung, JOHANN CHRISTOPH, a distinguished linguist and lexicographer, was born 1732, in Pomerania, and died September 10, 1806, at Dresden, where, since 1787, he had held the office of chief-librarian. His chief works are his Wörterbuch der Hochdeutschen Mundart (5 vols. 1774-86), in which he took Dr Johnson as his model; and his Mithridates oder allgemeine Sprachenkunde (1806), a work on general philology.
