Agulhas

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 1: A to Beaufort, p. 106–107

Agulhas, CAPE, the most southern point of Africa, lies about 100 miles ESE. of the Cape of

Good Hope, in lat. 34^{\circ} 49' S., long. 20^{\circ} 0' 40'' E. The point is very dangerous for ships; fogs are frequent, the currents are uncertain, and there are many rocks to seaward. In 1849, a lighthouse was erected on the point. The Agulhas Bank extends along the whole southern coast of Africa, from near Natal to Saldanha Bay. It has an average breadth of 40 miles, and is dangerous to navigation. The waters abound in fish. Agulhas (Portuguese) means 'needles.'
