Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 1: A to Beaufort, p. 107

Ahwas, a small village of Persia, in the province of Khuzistan, 70 miles NE. of Bassora. The neighbourhood is covered with the ruins of the capital of Artabanus, the last of the Parthian kings. Since the 10th century, the town has fallen into such decay that not more than fifty families inhabit the present miserable village.
