Ain, an eastern department of France, separated from Savoy by the Rhone. Area, 2239 sq. m. The eastern part is mountainous, with summits 5000 to 6500 feet high. Agriculture is the chief industry, others being the silk and paper manufacture, and the making of horn articles. Bourg is the capital. Pop. (1891) 356,907.
