Alamos, Los, a mining-town of Mexico, in the southern part of the state of Sonora, 45 miles E. of the Gulf of California; pop. 10,000.

Åland Islands, some 300 small islands and rocks in the Gulf of Bothnia, opposite Abo, the largest being situated about 25 miles from the Swedish coast. Only 80 of them are inhabited. The inhabitants are of Swedish origin, skilful sailors and fishermen. The total population is about 16,000, of whom two-thirds inhabit the largest island, called Åland, which is 18 miles in length. These islands belonged formerly to Sweden, but were finally taken possession of by Russia in 1809. The Emperor Nicholas constructed strong fortifications at Bomarsund, on the east side of the main island, which in August 1854 were destroyed by an Anglo-French force.
