Allemande

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 1: A to Beaufort, p. 170

Allemande is a German national dance (hence the French name, meaning 'German'), originally Swabian, in various kinds of waltz tempo. It was introduced into France in the time of Louis XIV., and became extremely popular on the stage under Napoleon I. The name has also been used for an orchestral composition in slow and measured time, not for dancing.
