Altenstein

Altenstein, KARL, BARON VON STEIN ZUM, a Prussian statesman, born at Ansbach, October 7, 1770. In 1808 he became the head of the depart- ment of finance, and in 1817 was made minister of public worship and education. He had much to do with founding the universities of Berlin and Bonn. He died at Berlin, May 14, 1840.
