Altoona, a city of Pennsylvania, U.S., at the eastern base of the Alleghanies, 117 miles E. of Pittsburg. It contains large locomotive works and machine-shops in connection with the Pennsylvania Central Railroad, employing 4500 hands. Near Altoona is a remarkable triumph of railway engineering, known as the 'Horseshoe Bend.' Pop. (1870) 10,610; (1890) 30,337.
