Amati, a family of Cremona, famous violin-makers in the 16th and 17th centuries. Its most illustrious members were Andrea (died about 1577); his younger brother Nicola (flourished 1568-86); Andrea's two sons, Antonio (flourished 1589-1627) and Geronimo; and the latter's son, Niccolò (1596-1684), the master of Guarneri and Stradivari.
