Anatolia, a Greek name for Asia Minor (q.v.). The word is derived from the Gr. Anatolé, 'the rising of the sun,' 'the east;' so that as a word it has the same meaning, though not the same application as the Italian Levante, used of all the countries lying east of the Mediterranean; and the same as Orient, derived from the Latin, used of the 'East' in the widest sense. From Anatolia is formed the Turkish Anadöli, generally applied to the western and northern portions of Asia Minor.
