Andernach, a little town belonging to the district of Coblenz on the Rhine, was once a Roman fortress styled Antunnacum, then a residence of the Merovingian kings, and afterwards became one of the most flourishing places on the Rhine. The great tower on the north side, the fine old church—partly built in the Carolingian times—the old gate, the ruins of the great castle of the Archbishops of Cologne, and other relics of antiquity, give quite a medieval aspect to the town. It now contains (1885) 5781 people; and is celebrated for its millstones, and for cement made of its tufa rock or trass.
