Andouin, JEAN VICTOR, naturalist, was born at Paris, 27th April 1797, and studied medicine and the natural sciences. Installed in 1833 as professor of Entomology at the Jardin des Plantes, he made special studies on the muscardine (a silkworm disease), the parasites infesting the vine, and other insect pests. He contributed to the scientific journals, wrote a book on the natural history of the French coasts (2 vols. 1830), and edited the section on insects in Cuvier's Règne Animal; but his chief work was his Histoire des Insectes nuisibles à la Vigne (1842). He died 9th November 1841.
