Annau, a small seaport, and royal and parliamentary burgh, in Dumfriesshire, on the river Annan, near its entrance into the Solway Firth, 18 miles ESE. of Dumfries by rail. It is neat and well built; among the chief industries are tanning and bacon-curing. Edward Irving was a native; and Carlyle, as a schoolboy, led 'a doleful and hateful life' at the academy. The burgh unites with Dumfries, &c. in returning one member to parliament. Pop (1891) 3478.
