Anodyne (Gr. an, 'not,' and odyne, 'pain'), a medicine used to assuage pain. Anodynes may act either on the nerves and nerve-terminations (aconite, belladonna, cocaine, &c.); on the brain (chloral, Indian hemp); or on all these parts (opium, bromide of potassium). See ANÆSTHESIA, NARCOTICS, SLEEP.
