Anwari

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 1: A to Beaufort, p. 327

Anwari, a celebrated Persian poet who flourished during the 12th century, was born in Khorassan, and became a favourite of the Seljukide sultan, Sanjar. His poems consist chiefly of lengthy panegyrics and shorter lyrical effusions. The latter (ghazels) are characterised by simplicity, ease, and naturalness; but the kasidas, long poems mainly in praise of his patron, are disguised by extravagant imagery and historical conceits. They abound in keen sarcasm against others. Anwari, who was also one of the most notable astrologers of his time, died between 1191 and 1196.
