Apnea

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 1: A to Beaufort, p. 333

Apnea, an abnormal state of the animal organism during which there is a complete cessation of breathing. It is brought about by too vigorous artificial respiration, as the result of which the blood contains more than the normal quantity of oxygen, and the respiratory nervous centre which controls the breathing is unstimulated and in a state of complete rest. See RESPIRATION.
