Apomor'phia

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 1: A to Beaufort, p. 339

Apomor'phia is an alkaloid prepared from morphia by heating with hydrochloric acid. It is a rapid and powerful emetic, but its effects quickly pass off; and it causes very little depression. Its chief value depends upon the ease with which it can be administered by hypodermic Injection (q.v.), as vomiting can thus be induced even when swallowing is difficult or impossible—e.g. in cases of poisoning.
