Appin (Apthane, 'abbey lands'), a beautiful coast district of Argylshire, extending along the east shore of Loch Linnhe, 15 miles NNE. of Oban. It is the country of a branch of the Stewarts, whom Hogg has celebrated in verse, and a history of whom was published at Edinburgh in 1880.
