Ar'afat

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 1: A to Beaufort, p. 369

Ar'afat, MOUNT, Orphat or Jebel-cr-'rahme ('mountain of mercy'), is a granite hill about 15 miles SE. of Mecca, visited by the faithful, and believed to be the spot where Adam, conducted by the angel Gabriel, met again his wife Eve, after a punitive separation of 200 years, on account of their disobedience in Paradise. It is not above 260 feet high, but its circuit is a mile and a half.
