Are'trus, a Greek physician of Cappadocia, who flourished about 100 A.D. He is considered to rank next to Hippocrates in the skill with which he treated diseases; was eclectic in his method; and in the diagnosis of disease is superior to most of the ancient physicians. The first four books of his great work, preserved nearly complete, treat of the causes and symptoms of diseases; the other four, of the cure of the same. There is an edition by Adams (1856), and an English translation (1837).
