Arias Monta'nus, BENEDICTUS, a Catholic divine and learned orientalist, was born in 1527, in the south Estremadura. He studied at Seville and Alcala, and became a Benedictine. He was present at the celebrated Council of Trent; and in 1568 was sent by Philip II. to Antwerp, to superintend the publication of the famous edition of the Antwerp Polyglot Bible (8 vols. folio, 1569-72). He became librarian at the Escorial, and died in 1598.
