Armageddon, the great battlefield of the Apocalypse, in which the final struggle between the powers of good and evil is to be fought. Its name was undoubtedly suggested by that famous battlefield, Megiddo (Judges, v. 19), in the plain of Esdracon, on which some of the most important battles in the history of Israel were fought, as the victories of Barak over the Canaanites, and Midian over the Gibeonites, as well as the defeat of Saul by the Philistines, and of Josiah by the Egyptians.
