Ascoli, GRAZIADIO ISAIA, Italian philologist, was born of Jewish parentage at Görz in 1829, and was destined for a mercantile career, but early devoted himself to the study of comparative philology. His Studii Orientali e Linguistici procured him in 1861 a chair of philology at the Milan Academy, and besides founding the Archivio Glottologico (1873), he has published Fonologia Comparata des Sanscrit, del Greco, e del Latino (1870), Studii Critici (1861-77), &c.
