Assos, a mined town on the Gulf of Edremid, from the still imposing remains of which the successful excavations, in 1881-83, of the American Institute of Archaeology have brought to light the agora, with senate-house and colonnade, a bath, theatre, gymnasium, statues of heroes, and seven Christian churches.
