Astýages, son of Cyaxares, the last king of Media, reigned 594-559 B.C. In the latter year he was dethroned by Cyrus, who, according to Herodotus, was his grandson. An old tradition has it that Astýages, having no male heir, married his daughter, Mandane, to Spitames, a Median, whom he declared his successor, and so aroused the jealousy of the other great nobles; that the Persian Cyrus revolted in 559, and defeated Astýages, whom he took prisoner, but afterwards appointed governor of Hyrcania; and that Spitames was slain, and Mandane then became the wife of Cyrus. For Herodotus' account, which is probably nearer the truth, see CYRUS.
