Avallon (anc. Aballo), a town of the department of Yonne, France, 26 miles SE. of Auxerre, on a steep hill of red granite, nearly surrounded by the river Cousin. Avallon is a very ancient town, of Celtic origin, and has been often besieged and taken. The church, in Burgundian Gothic, dates from the 12th century. Pop. 5570.
