Azurine (Leuciscus caruleus), or BLUE ROACH, a fish of the same genus with the roach, chub, dace, minnow, &c., and most nearly resembling the Red-eye (q.v.) or Rudd (L. erythrophthalmus), from which it is distinguished by the slate-blue colour of the back, and the whiteness of the abdomen and fins. It is a fresh-water fish. It is very probably only a variety of the latter, very rare in Britain, but not uncommon on the Continent—e.g. in some of the Swiss lakes.
