Bacsanyi, JÁNOS

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 1: A to Beaufort, p. 645

Bacsanyi, JÁNOS, a Hungarian poet, was born May 11, 1763, at Tapolcza. His first work, published in 1785, procured him an appointment in a public office, but a liberal poem cost him this in 1793, as well as his liberty the year after. In 1796 he came to Vienna, and here he married a few years later the German poetess, Gabrielle Baumgarten—an unhappy match. In 1809, Bacsanyi translated Napoleon's proclamation to the Hungarians, and was afterwards obliged to take refuge in Paris. After the peace of Paris, he lived at Linz, and there he died, May 12, 1845. His collected poems appeared at Pesth in 1827.
