Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 1: A to Beaufort, p. 668

Bakhtegan, or NIRIS, a salt-lake in the Persian province of Farsistan, 47 miles E. of Shiraz. Lying 5100 feet above the sea, it extends 74 miles south-eastward, and varies in width between 4\frac{1}{3} and 13\frac{1}{2} miles. It largely dries up in summer, when its bed yields very fine salt.
