Barquisime'to, the fourth in size of the towns of Venezuela, is situated on an affluent of the Tocuyo River, in a fertile and healthy plain, about 1700 feet above sea-level. Founded in 1522, it became a flourishing town, but was destroyed in 1812 by a dreadful earthquake. The city, which is approached by the German-made railway from the coast to Valencia (1893), has sometimes been capital of a province; pop. 31,476.
