Bazeilles, a village in the French department of Ardennes, near the right bank of the Meuse, 4 miles SSE. of Sedan. A pretty, well-to-do place, it was burnt to the ground by the Bavarians on the day of the battle of Sedan (1st September 1870), in revenge either for its obstinate defence by the marines, or for the villagers having fired on the invaders, and maltreated some of their wounded. It was rebuilt, in great measure with English contributions, and now has some 2000 inhabitants.
