Sylvester, JAMES JOSEPH, mathematician, was born in London, 3d September 1814, studied at St John's College, Cambridge, and was successively professor in University College, London, in the University of Virginia, at Woolwich, in the John Hopkins University, and at Oxford (Savilian professor, 1883-94); and he published many memoirs, received many medals and honours, was LL.D., D.C.L., F.R.S., and fellow of many foreign academies.
