Taffety

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 10: Swastika to Zyrianovsk and Index, p. 46

Taffety, or TAFFETA (Persian táfta), a term formerly applied to all plain silks simply woven by regular alternations of the warp and weft. Modifications have, however, been introduced, by varying the quality of the warp and weft, and by the substitution of various colours for the single one of the original taffety. It has therefore become a sort of generic term for Plain Silk, and even for some combinations of silk, wool, &c.
