Torgau, a town of Prussia, and a fortress of the second rank, stands on the left bank of the Elbe, 70 miles SSW. of Berlin by rail. The river is here crossed by an old bridge and a railway bridge. Among the public buildings are the castle, now used as barracks, and containing a church consecrated by Luther in 1544; a town-church, with pictures by Cranach, and the grave of Luther's wife; and an old town-hall. Here on 3d November 1760 Frederick the Great defeated the Austrians. Pop. 10,988.
