Torre dell' Ammunziata, a thriving town of Southern Italy, stands on the south base of Mount Vesuvius, 13 miles SE. of Naples by rail. A fishery and a coasting trade are carried on. Pop. 20,060.—TORRE DEL GRECO, another town at the base of Vesuvius, is only 7 miles from Naples by rail, and has been repeatedly destroyed by eruptions. Fishing is a great source of occupation, and coral is worked. Pop. 21,588.
