Tournefort, JOSEPH PITTON DE (1656-1708), botanist, was born at Aix, travelled in Greece and elsewhere, and died professor in the Collège de France. His botanical system maintained its ground till the time of Linnaeus, and his principal works were Institutiones Rei Herbariae (1700) and Éléments de Botanique (1694).
