Urim and Thummim (Heb.), first mentioned in Exod. xxviii. 30 in connection with the High-priest's breast-plate, apparently a pair of objects used at critical junctures as a kind of traditional oracle, but which could not always be counted on for an answer (1 Sam. xxviii. 6). They were wanting to the High-priest after the Captivity (Ezra, ii. 63). The LXX. translation of these words is δήλωσις καὶ ἀλήθεια; the Vulgate, Doctrina et Veritas.
