Vedder. ELIHU, an American painter, was born at New York in 1836, and studied at Paris and in Italy, where he ultimately made his residence. His subjects are mostly ideal—‘The Lair of the Sea-serpent,’ ‘Fisherman and Djin,’ ‘Death of Abel,’ ‘Greek Actor’s Daughter,’ ‘Cumean Sibyl,’ ‘Nausicaa and her Companions.’ He has also illustrated Edward FitzGerald’s ‘Omar Khayyām’ (Boston, 1884).
