Vellore, a town of British India, 80 miles W. of Madras by rail, famous for its old fortress defended for two years by the English against Hyder Ali. Here Tippoo Saib's family lived till 1806, when, after a bloody mutiny of sepoys, they were transferred to Calcutta. Pop. 38,022.
