Vitebsk, capital of a government in the west of Russia, on the Western Dwina, 380 miles S. of St Petersburg by rail. It trades in grain, flax, sugar, and timber with Riga. Pop. 64,676, very many of them Jews. The government has an area (17,440 sq. m.) larger than Switzerland.
