Vitré, an ancient town of Brittany, in the dept. of Ille-et-Vilaine, on the Vilaine, 24 miles E. of Rennes by rail. It is still surrounded with ramparts, and contains the ruined castle of the Tremouilles. Rochers, the residence of Madame de Sévigné, is miles south. Manufactures of cloth and hats are carried on.
