Volhynia, a government in the west of Russia, bounded on the W. by the Polish provinces, from which it is separated by the river Bug. The surface in the north of the government is low, and plains and morasses, covered with forests, abound; in the south there are hills and fertile corn-bearing land. The area (27,743 sq. m.) is larger than that of Greece; pop. (1885) 2,264,867; (1897) 2,907,902. The capital is Zhitomir.
