Vosges, a dept. in the north-east of France, formed out of the south part of the old province of Lorraine, is bounded on the E. by Germany Alsace. The surface is mountainous, the hills being well wooded, while the western plain is very fertile. There are iron, silver, lead, copper, cobalt, zinc, manganese, and antimony mines. The dept. has an area of 2266 sq. m. and a pop. (1891) of 410,196 (in 1886, 413,707). It is divided into the five arrondissements Epinal, Mirecourt, Neufchâteau, Remiremont, Saint-Dié. The capital is Epinal.
