Waco, 'the geyser city' of Texas, capital of McLennan county, on the Brazos River, crossed by a suspension bridge, 186 miles by rail NW. of Houston. It is the seat of Baylor University, contains female and commercial colleges, boasts sixteen warm artesian wells (104° F.), manufactures woollens, mattresses, and saddery, and has a large trade in country produce. Pop. (1890) 14,445.
