Wallsend, a town of Northumberland noted for its collieries, 4 miles N.E. of Newcastle. It is named from its being at the end of the Roman wall (see HADRIAN'S WALL); and many Roman relics have been found here. Pop. (1881) 6351; (1891) 11,620.
