Walvisch Bay

Walvisch Bay (Dutch, 'Bay of Whales'), anglicised as Walfish Bay, or, more completely, Walwich Bay, a territory of 480 sq. m. on the west coast of Africa, 420 miles N. of the mouth of the Orange River. Declared British in 1878, it is surrounded by the German territory of Damaraaland, and annexed to Cape Colony in 1884. The bay affords a secure anchorage. Pop. 800.
