Wellington College, in Berkshire, 4 miles SSE. of Wokingham, a public school founded in 1853, in memory of the Duke of Wellington, from funds raised by public subscription. The foundation-stone was laid by Queen Victoria in 1856, and it was opened by her in 1859. It has ninety scholarships for the sons of deceased army officers, twelve exhibitions, seven open scholarships, and over 400 boys, the foundationers being boarded and educated for £10 per annum and non-foundationers for £110.
